FOR WHAT ARE UNIONS GOOD?

Here in Arizona our public schoolteachers ended a 6-day strike (the unions called it a “walkout” to get-around a state law allowing termination of strikers) which lasted from April 26 through May 3.
The strike focused on the State capitol/Governor which is not where teacher’s salaries are determined. District school boards determine pay rates for school employees.
Prior to the strike the budget to fund education already included a 20% teacher’s raise over three years (see pages 11-14). That would have happened without the strike.
Union reps are claiming a great victory for school kids by forcing the State to give them what was already in the mail!
Unions are good at two things . . accumulating massive treasure chests full of cash by collecting dues, and, organizing strikes/walkouts designed to get their members more money. How does either of those benefit school children?
This is a political issue and unions are ALWAYS on the Left, the Liberal side. Unions will always oppose Pay-For-Performance, or merit-based pay structuring, which would truly benefit students. Unions protect non-performing teachers.
