CHRISTMAS (5 of 7) — WHEN?

The Holy Bible does not stipulate a proper time for celebrating the birth of the Son of God. Nor does the Bible stipulate why, or how, a celebration of remembrance of Jesus’ birth ought to be conducted.
Since the Christmas celebration is a construct of human origin it is governed by the preferences of people and cannot be thought of as being an act of faith in obedience to God’s word.
The origin of the Christmas holiday cannot be traced further back in time than about 330-years after the birth of Jesus Christ. At that time all non-Christian religions had established festivals and holidays around the time of the winter solstice.
As more people were converted to Christianity the lack of a winter holiday became an issue. So, for the last 1700 years, or so, Christians have had a holiday in late December. The basis of the celebration was said to be the birth of Jesus Christ.
There is a conflict between human tradition and what the Bible says regarding the time of Jesus’ birth.
The Bible says there were shepherds in the field with their sheep on the night Jesus was born. This means it was certainly not winter.
But, the urgent socio-political need for a “Christian” winter holiday led to the establishment of the tradition that Jesus was born in late December.
When the holiday is to be celebrated is not a matter of obedience to Biblical mandates. It is a human tradition historically motivated by a need for a winter holiday.
Even though the historical motivation is questionable, the point of remembering and celebrating the birth of Jesus Christ is the important thing, because his is the only name given under Heaven whereby anyone can be saved.
